Raising Exceptional Young Men (Boyz-2-Men)

In our society, we typically wait until something goes wrong, a problem occurs, or a disorder develops before we seek personal assistance. We go to the doctor when we get sick, the lawyers when we’re in trouble and the plumber after the drains have backed up. However, according to the Australian macho stereotype, men often avoid seeking professional help even when they need it. Very few men will even consider seeking assistance from a professional life-coach to learn the skills and strategies to prevent problems before they occur. Even fewer have a personal trainer to help transform their lives in powerful ways: to become ‘real-men’, leaders in their field, and an inspiration to others.

Interestingly, the few men who do have a personal coach are those who tend to become the most successful men in the world. Whether Ian Thorpe, Michael Jordan, or Tiger Woods in the sporting field, Mel Gibson, Robbie Williams, or Andrea Bocelli in the performing arts domain, Kerry Packer, Robert Kiyosaki, or Bill Gates in the world of business, each professional had and/or still has personal advisors, trainers, and a personal life-coach.

When we think of having or seeing a psychologist ourselves, we tend to assume it’s because we have a problem that needs solving. The world’s most successful men view problems as nothing more than challenges they would like to overcome and personal goals that they would like to achieve. Whether it be the goal to win the championship, close the deal, improve concentration and memory, obtain higher grades, or enhance relationships, their overall goal is to improve personal performance.

BOYZ-2-MEN is a 10-week workshop that offers boys (aged 12-15 and 16-18) the opportunity to have a professional and personal life-coach in a small group setting. Each workshop runs for 1.5 hours.

The BOYZ-2-MEN program covers the following issues:
- Enhancing self-worth and esteem
- Identity formation
- Ideals of a strong leader
- Knights and Warriors: Learning true masculine qualities
- Building Confidence
- Motivation Enhancement
- Dealing with personal challenge (e.g., bullies, worries, grief)
- Relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours
- Improving academic and sports performance

The workshop emphasises the importance of being a "team". We participate in teams in many different areas of our life, including the school class, on the sporting field, and in the family home. Each member of a team plays an important and distinct role. Each player has unique objectives. For example, the value of a goalie is to stop the ball, whereas the value of a striker is to score goals. A successful team requires all types of diverse players with individual objectives, but also works towards a collective goal. In the same vein, BOYZ-2-MEN participants establish their own personal goals that they would like to achieve, while at the same time adhering to the collective objectives of the program: building respect, identifying life-values, and finding purpose. The BOYZ-2-MEN is not a treatment group for boys with behavioural or emotional problems. Other more specific interventions cater for these needs. Rather, BOYZ-2-MEN is a foundation upon which to take everyday boys and build exceptional young men.
